For Homes That Really BurnWoodChimney sweeping, stove and insert installs and masonry for Powell, Liberty Township, Lewis Center and Delaware

Around Powell, plenty of families still split their own firewood and keep a stove or fireplace going all winter. That's great for the heating bill, and hard on the chimney. Creosote builds up faster, flues work harder, and the raccoons in the wooded lots love an open flue. We keep wood-burning chimneys clean and safe, and the phone gets answered at 3 AM just like at noon.

What heavy wood burning does to a chimney

Creosote coats the flue

Every fire leaves tar-like deposits. The more you burn, and the cooler the fire, the faster it builds.

Chimney fire risk

Thick creosote can ignite. A chimney fire can crack flue tiles even if you never saw flames.

Draft slows down

Buildup narrows the flue, so stoves get sluggish and smoke more when you open the door.

Wildlife moves in

Raccoons and squirrels from wooded lots nest in uncapped flues, especially in spring.

Know your buildup

The three stages of creosote

Shine a flashlight up past the damper. What you see tells you a lot about how soon your chimney needs attention.

Stage 1: Dusty soot

Loose, powdery and easy to brush away. Normal for a regularly swept chimney.

Stage 2: Flaky and crunchy

Shiny black flakes, like puffed cereal. Time to sweep, and to check how you're burning.

Stage 3: Glazed tar

Hard, shiny coating that's very flammable. Stop burning and call for removal.

Prevent it

Burn seasoned wood, run hotter fires, and don't let a stove smolder overnight on low air.

Firewood basics that keep creosote down

The single biggest factor in creosote buildup is the wood you burn. Here's how to get it right.

SPLIT

Split it early

Split wood dries far faster than rounds. Do it in spring for next winter.

STACK

Stack off the ground

Bark up, ends open to the wind, top covered and sides open.

SEASON

Give it time

Most hardwoods need 6–12 months or more. Oak often takes longer.

TEST

Under 20%

A cheap moisture meter on a fresh split face should read below about 20%.

FAQ

Wood-burning questions from Powell

Any time: (614) 643-6483.

Who picks up if I call late at night?

A real person, at any hour, weekends and holidays included. A chimney that's roaring, smoke filling the house or an animal trapped in the flue gets a technician out right away. If you suspect an active chimney fire, get everyone out and call 911 first.

How often should a wood-burning chimney be swept?

NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection, with sweeping when buildup is found. If you heat with a stove or burn most nights, plan on at least once a season. Heavy burners may need a mid-winter sweep.

What does a chimney fire sound like?

Often a loud roaring or rumbling, like a freight train, with popping and a strong hot smell. Some chimney fires are slow and quiet. If you suspect one, get out and call 911, and don't use the fireplace again until it's inspected.

Do I need a liner for a wood stove insert?

Yes. Inserts need a full-length liner sized to the appliance, running from the insert to the top of the chimney, for proper draft and safe cleaning.

How dry should my firewood be?

Aim for under about 20% moisture, measured on a freshly split face. Most hardwoods need at least 6–12 months of seasoning, split and stacked off the ground.

There are raccoons in our chimney. What do we do?

Keep the damper and doors closed and don't light a fire. Spring is when mothers raise kits in chimneys, so we make sure every animal is out before sealing the top with a cap.
